HISTORY OF CURRUMBIN EXPLAINED

The word Currumbin is derived from kurrohmin, translating to Kangaroo, and according to the history of Australia Post Office the word Currumbin means high up or place where the high trees grow.

Back in the early days of travel along the Coast there was a fork across the Currumbin Creek which was able to be taken at low tide, but had to be carefully negotiated due to the quicksand which was prevalent in Currumbin Creek. Late in the 19th century, coaches travelled from Southport over the Nerang River via the Meyers Ferry taking both mail and passengers aboard. Then they travelled along the beachfront using tidal crossings at both the Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creeks to eventually reach their destination at Coolangatta/Tweed Heads.

In 1903, the Nerang to Tweed Rail line opened and with the then improved access, there were a number of pioneer families that were able to settle and develop farms around the estuary as well as in the Currumbin Valley and the Currumbin Creek area.
