The word Coorparoo is derived from an Aboriginal name for Norman Creek and the Coorparoo Clan lived South of the Brisbane River, generally camping alongside the creeks. Coorparoo became the chosen name of the suburb in 1875, before that it was known as Four Mile Camp.
On the corner of Cavendish Road and Old Cleveland Road is a preserved Tram Post (Stop No. 26) which is a reminder of the past Brisbane tram system.

Coorparoo is home to Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club, who play all their home games at Langlands Park, where the training sessions for both the Queensland and Australian Rugby League teams are held when they are playing in Brisbane.
